Reading opens our eyes to a world of wonder. With each page we turn, our imaginations come alive. We have the ability to visualize anything with books. Because of this, I am looking to introduce my students to a wide arrange of authors through author studies.
We are a small charter school on the west side of Chicago. My second grade classroom lacks book sets by author and I am often running to our public library to get books. Since most of the materials are borrowed from the library, it makes it difficult to have for an extended period of time. Also, our school does not have a school library, which adds to this difficulty.
Students in my class will use the materials to study the writing styles of different authors. Because each author writes with their own technique, students will get the chance to find an author that they really like. This gives the students the ability to choose books from other authors than those they may typically read.
I have 20 students in my classroom that would use the materials requested. I would also share the books with my teammate and her 20 students. Our class is looking to receive books by a few different authors, which will be used over again in following years.
Once again, I believe that it is important to expose children to a variety of authors. Through author studies, students get the opportunity to find books that meet their interests. This will help to create stronger, well-rounded readers.
