The students at Harrison Parkway Elementary are a beautiful example of where strength lies in differences, not in similarities. We understand that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and that all of the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what. We also understand that reading engagement is the foundation for building successful readers and a strong literacy environment. Diverse books are an essential component of increasing reading achievement for all students because of engagement. As humans, we seek out and enjoy connections. Students must have the opportunity to engage in texts that relate to their experiences, their cultures, and their interests.
All children need to see themselves and their peers in the stories shared and discussed at school, both in the library and in the curriculum.
Children of color need diverse books with diverse authors because so often they do not see themselves in literature and therefore feel marginalized, perhaps even invisible. Children’s books teach children about humanity, society, culture, and life. Diversity in children’s literature is essential toward building a more compassionate world. At Harrison Parkway Elementary we are committed to building a rich learning environment that fosters identity safety and is equitable for all.
My Project
The last several years the publishing world has seen a rise in diverse authors, characters, and stories, and now it’s time to update the reading material in our school library, curriculum, and classroom to represent all the learners at Harrison Parkway Elementary.
"Imagine the impact if schools were full of diverse books — providing a literary peek into the lives of not only students themselves but of those around them." A great story featuring diverse characters can change the lives of students yearning to find themselves in a book, and it can help other students learn about experiences outside of their own.
The students at Harrison Parkway Elementary want to see themselves through the stories and pages of the books that fill their learning environment. It is after all the stories, that make us human.
The materials used through the funding of this project have been carefully reviewed and selected by the students at Harrison Parkway. Through the help of outside and inner library loans, the students at Harrison Parkway Elementary have carefully selected a list of titles they feel best represent the individuals and their needs within our school community. The books selected will fill the school library shelves for students to browse, checkout and enjoy! These materials will also be carefully aligned with specific classroom curriculum so that teachers can invite students into learning, in an identity safe way, through the eyes of our students.
