My Students
Imagine leaving your home, sacrificing everything and moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. Our classroom is bare.
I work in a wonderful school with a small immigrant population in an economically disadvantaged area of New York City.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We are developing learning stations so we can listen, speak, read and write very quickly. We help students learn English while holding on and becoming literate in their own language as well. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
My Project
These IPad Minis will continue to enhance our print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Our online Imagine Learning Program is a place that my students really enjoy-they listen to English and they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student lesson that is placed in their level of ELA skills is accepted joyfully and they are thankful for the opportunities to use technology. All of these online lessons have been chosen with my students current level in mind.
With these new IPads my students will be able to choose from a variety of devices that will allow them to work independently at their own grade level.
The best way to increase English is to listen, speak, read and write more, and these IPads will continue to help my students grow stronger in their ELA skills. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent activities, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with technology devices.
