This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located between two large housing developments.
A large percentage of the school's population comes from low-income homes where parents are struggling to support their families.
Many are from single-parent or English as a second language homes. A percentage are even from homeless shelters. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a community school and for many of our students, it's a home away from home. Some students stay at school well into the evening hours participating in after school programs, clubs or sports teams. Many of our families look at our school as a home away from home as well. Our food pantry supplies food and necessities to our families. Doctors visit the school on a regular basis to check vision and provide dental exams.
My Project
This is the first year that we have a cheerleading team. Our team started small but has grown to 30 scholars in grades 3-8. New uniforms will help our scholars look more like a team. The uniforms will create a sense of unity among the school team. Students are learning flips, stunts, and cheers under the direction of our school secretary. They have performed at school-wide events such as our PBIS Pep Rally and basketball games.
Our scholars are developing valuable life long skills like determination, teamwork, and commitment.
They are also developing social skills as they learn how to work with others of different ages and backgrounds. The cheerleaders also perform community service. They visited the nearby senior center to spread cheer and happiness to the residents.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
