I'm a second grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch.
My classroom has 24 students and exactly 24 chairs.
The problem is that some of these chairs are cracked or too small for second graders--they're made for preschool students!
No child should be without a proper chair in school-- a desk and a chair are the two school supplies even more basic than a pencil and paper!
My Project
With the addition of 15 new chairs to my classroom, I will be able to get rid of the broken chairs and provide each student with one that is the correct height for second graders. I received nine of these chairs in the last year from DonorsChoose.org, and they are wonderfully sturdy. We just need a few more to ensure that every student has a proper chair to sit in!
By helping to place 15 new chairs into my classroom, you will be providing students with one of the most basic school supplies I can think of.
You will also help to minimize the distraction and discomfort caused when a seven or eight-year-old has to sit in a broken or tiny chair.
