My students need 15 copies of the book, "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo. We would also love to have a copy of the audio CD of the story that is read by Graeme Malcolm.

We are very excited about starting a gifted and talented program in our high-needs elementary school. We have been able to identify many students that qualify for our program and we are looking forward to helping these students reach their potential.
The book, The Tale of Despereaux, and the audio CD would be instrumental in creating a fabulous cross-curriculum unit for these students.
It has taken us awhile to get a Gifted and Talented Program in our school and while we are very enthusiastic about the impact on our students, supplies are very hard to acquire. Having used this particular book in a private school, I was amazed at how well students responded to the themes in the book and how easily I was able to coordinate cross-curriculum activities. This piece of literature really lends itself to a variety of themes that would offer encouragement and motivation to this specific group of students.
The fifteen copies of "The Tale of Despereaux" and the audio recording will enable me to reconstruct a dynamic literature unit that will involve all areas of the curriculum. The strong messages of being true to yourself and the presence of unlikely heroes is one that will surely resonate with students that are in the lower economic level and have little to enrich their academic studies. As the narrator notes the message, "Every action, reader, no matter how small, has a consequence." is a powerful life lesson that is critical for our students to be successful in the outside community. Having seen the impact this book had in private school, I would like to bring that same delightful treasure to public school.
Students will benefit not only from the obvious themes in this book but can also relate to the other theme of parents withdrawing. The message of subsequent redemption is one that promotes hope and encouragement to young students that all to often find themselves in difficult situations with their own families. Finally, students will be able to analyze and enjoy all three types of media; literature, audio and film.
Your help will provide an invaluable key that will unlock the treasures of great literature. My students will learn about integrity and the importance of character through a vehicle that will grab their attention and leave them with skills that they can use throughout their young lives. Thank you for providing those keys to that kind of magic.
