Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. They are also students who have special needs. Parents do their best to provide the bare essentials that their kids need to start school but many times that is all that they can give them. Many of the families have at least 4 kids in the school. It is a lot to ask a family to purchase materials when some of them cannot pay their utility bills. Although the parents and the school community do their best to provide for the children, with budget cuts it is getting harder to provide them with tools for learning.
My Project
New library books will ensure my students have the thought- provoking reading materials they need to become engaged readers and successful learners. My students need access to authentic literature that will encourage them to read. Authentic books will transform the reading and writing lives of my students. The literature chosen are modern books that are of interest to them. These novels will build upon a much needed robust literacy program. The novels will also build upon a classroom library that already exists and will enhance critical literacy skills that are fundamental to future success. As students read and choose books that they are interested in they will be involved in projects each quarter that demonstrate their understanding of different literary elements.
