This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach middle school reading intervention. My school is over 85% free and reduced lunch, and most kids are behind their grade level in terms of reading. Every year, about 15% of our kids are considered English Language Learners. Many of them are at the beginning level of English.
My kids need phonemic awareness and phonics so they can learn to read.
Even though my kids are older, they need the same skills younger kids to do when learning to read. The Phonemic Awareness Learning Centers will give kids a fun practice opportunity. The Touch and Read Cards will help them match sounds to letters, which leads to reading words. The Building Fluency cards motivate kids to keep practicing, and the Hear Myself Phones make sure they don't have to worry about the other kids hearing them, which is very important in middle school! The pictures with these items will build vocabulary and connect the letters back to the sounds.
