Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is comprised of 24 students who learn differently from their peers. I am a special education teacher who strives to give each of my varied learners the style of teaching they need to excel in school. My students come in before school to get extra help and stay after school for tutoring and homework help. School is a safe haven for them to grow and thrive. Over the course of the two years I have with each of my students, they learn valuable lessons on how to succeed once they leave our school.
Our school is a Title I school where 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced priced food.
Not just lunch, breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a suburb of Phoenix that has a high poverty rate and high crime rate, yet my students come every day with smiles on their faces and want to be here.
The school has an A rating and strives for excellence for all of the students. This proves that coming from poverty and a rough neighborhood does not hold any of our students back. They strive to do their best and are thriving while they with us in school.
My Project
My student's desperately need new headphones so they have the ability to hear their tests being read aloud. In the state of Arizona, the Department of Education has changed the accommodation of having a human read aloud test questions to special education students to having the test questions read to them online. To date, each student in my class has been used to hearing my voice read them the test. We have a mix and match set of headphones that do not allow for each and every student in my class to be able to hear the test accurately.
These students stand a chance to do well on their test despite their disabilities.
They work hard each and every day and feel the same amount of pressure if not more than every other student. Changing accommodations on them so late in the school year has been hard so having new headphones that work, will benefit them greatly.
