My students need a set of 24 "Gettysburg" graphic novels to help us develop a deeper connection to the historic event by coupling it with a variety of higher level texts.

My Students
Sometimes it is very difficult to find that "in" for students that are several grade levels behind. But I have stumbled upon a great help! One that welcomes in any level of reader and hooks them into whatever content you present. What is this magic resource you ask? A graphic novel!
Ten hour days and piles of homework are nothing to our students, because they have already decided that they are not going to let their circumstance decide their fate.
With these kinds of characteristics, it is easy to see how our KIPPsters are uniquely positioned to make an amazing impact on the world. In my class we learn how to debate while studying science and social studies so that our students learn the importance of turning their education into action
My Project
I have recently stumbled on the magic formula! Take one part historical graphic novel, add two parts high level nonfiction text, and you have an amazingly engaged, and independent group of students that work feverishly to explore history. I have seen this formula work with Nat Turner, where I was able to excite my students about a confession written in 1831 by pairing it with a graphic novel. I can't even imagine what I will be able to accomplish by pairing the Gettysburg Graphic Novel with the Gettysburg Address!
By energizing our students with great resources and relevant lessons, you will help to unleash the full power of a KIPP school.
Our students consistently prove that they will walk the walk to get what they want from their education, and I can hardly think of a better investment in the future. Anyone concerned about education knows that the results we want to see will not necessarily show up on a standardized test; they will show up in a better future, with a generation of strong leaders leading.
