Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a kindergarten class of 30 students in an inner city school. Our school is a Title 1 funded school which means that our children are at risk of school failure and live in a low-income community. Most of my students who enter kindergarten do not know their basic math skills such as counting and number identification.

In the past I have purchased many learning resources and supplies for my students to learn with and use in the classroom. Unfortunately, the Lakeshore Market (would be our classroom store) I am asking for is not in my budget.

One math strand that my students need to master in kindergarten is money. My students need to learn how to identify, describe, count pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and one-dollar bills. They also need to learn how to read and write money amounts to $1.00 using dollar and cent symbols. Selecting coins for a given amount to pay for objects is something they learn. The Lakeshore Market would be used during instructional time to teach my students how to pay for items using different coins. The students would have the opportunity to pretend that they are in a store purchasing items. What better way to learn than "hands on?". Students would have to problem solve by asking themselves questions such as: "do I have enough money to buy other items?", "what can I buy with my money?" My students would be able to play shopkeepers and shoppers during free time in the classroom. In our school we strongly encourage healthy eating with our breakfast and lunch programs, this store along with the food pyramid, would help me to teach my students about healthy eating. My students can learn mathematics and nutrition using the store.

I would like to thank you in advance. Your generosity will ensure that my students have a classroom market where they can learn math in a hands on, exciting way and learn to make good choices about healthy eating.
