This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school students are from many different backgrounds. Each of them has different needs in order to learn, in my opinion, the most comprehensive and interesting curriculum...science! They love having a guinea pig as their classroom pet. It has helped with building connections, classroom management, and responsibility.
My students love learning with hands-on experiences, labs, and experiments.
Many of my students do not have a pet at home. Having a guinea pig gives them that sense of community and responsibility. I want to engage my middle school students with what we are learning and make it come to life for them. Being a pre-teen and teenager is a difficult time in their lives. I want my classroom to be a safe haven where they come to learn, have fun and become life-long learners.
My Project
Whenever I ask my students to draw what a scientist looks like, they draw a white male in a lab coat. I want my students to see real images of scientists, especially women. I want to make an interactive bulletin board and with postcards, posters and books of women in STEM. This board will be interchangeable with the different postcards and images from IF/THEN. I want to inspire the next generation of females to pursue a career in STEM by seeing themselves in the women who have already paved the way.
