This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a Title I priority school. This means that there is very little funding; yet, we have a high need for materials to support instruction. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges do not stop them from participating in class with a bright smile and an eagerness to learn something new.

I love how curious my students are about the world around them and how much they love school and learning!

My students are a diverse group of learners that bring a variety of cultures into the classroom. They all bring a unique personality and a strong desire for learning. In our class, we focus on a growth mindset, fostering positive relationships with our peers, and choosing kindness above everything else. This year brought upon some of the most difficult challenges yet, but my students showed perseverance and remarkable achievement through the school year. Their eagerness to learn is what keeps me motivated.

My Project

Hatching chicks in the classroom is probably my favorite activity every other year! Not only is it a wonderful hands-on life science lesson, but hatching chicks in the classroom also creates the perfect stage for teaching concepts across the curriculum because our students are so engaged! We use this engagement for teaching content standards in science, math, reading, writing, and art.

Children have a natural sense of curiosity about living things in the world around them.

Building on this curiosity, our students develop an understanding of biology through direct experience with living things, their life cycles, and their habitats. We have been partnering with Karabin Farms (Southington, CT) for this school-wide project since 2005! After our chicks have hatched and spent some time growing in our classroom, we take the chicks back to the farm to complete their life cycle. In order for my students to participate in our Spring 2022 Embryology Project (from home or at school) we need fiction and non-fiction books to enrich our learning "eggs-perience". The ink for the printer is for printing visual supports for our project.
