My Students

Some students just need some extra help, some one-on-one time, working in a small group, or just a second chance to get something new. These are my students.

My students are children who sometimes struggle in the fast paced classroom and need some extra time and help understanding difficult or new concepts.

I see small groups of second through fifth graders that need help in reading and math. These amazing children work hard breaking down math facts, problem solving, reading fluency, and comprehension. They come to my class to receive the small group attention they need to be successful in their regular classroom.

My Project

My students come to see me once or twice a day for thirty minute blocks during their reading or math time. That means I only have thirty minutes to help, inspire and teach them effectively.

Thirty minutes to make a difference and offer help that will last a lifetime!

For my math groups we work on concepts they are learning in the classroom and this is their time to build on what was being taught in the classroom for a true understanding. Many times throughout our day we are problem solving and drawing problems on whiteboards. It would be even better for these students if they could hold things in their hands and manipulate items to understand the problems. I have chosen math counters that can be used for sorting or counting to work out story problems. Sometimes the students are tired and having a fun math game to learn concepts would inspire them to want to learn new concepts. I found games for multiplication and division, fractions, adding and subtracting, and understanding number sense. This will be a great way to make learning math fun!

For my reading students we have a great reading program. However, the program included twenty wonderful audio books without something to play them on -- they are just sitting there. I am requesting three portable CD players with headphones so students can utilize these awesome resources during their independent reading time.

Lastly, for my students who struggle with focusing, nervousness and have a difficult time concentrating to comprehend a story I have requested weighted lap mats. These are to help calm students that are usually nervous and have a difficult time stay focused to comprehend a text.

These students need fun new ways to learn and make school an exciting place to be!
