My Students
My classroom is a world of energy and curiosity. Each morning we start the day by shouting our school wide mantra: I am smart and I deserve to be a success.
While these fourth graders are eager to learn new things, the digital age has brought about resistance to learn via books. Help us fix it!
My students are growing up in New York City.
They each have a unique story to tell of their pasts, presents and futures. This class of 25 inspirational fourth graders has blossomed before my eyes this year. They want new books. The need new books. They deserve new books.
With the internet being so accessible, my class has become dependent on learning new information through videos, websites and song lyrics. These are great resources that we can fortunately utilize. However, my class needs more access to printed books to build the reading stamina and comprehension skills that are vital to success in the classroom and beyond.
My Project
Students read daily to increase their reading levels. Having access to new books will enable and inspire them to complete daily and nightly reading assignments. At times, some of my students can be reluctant readers. The hope is that they will learn to love reading through high interest literature.
My students selected many of the titles I requested for my project. By doing this they have already shown me that they are prepared to make the commitment necessary to increase their reading levels and persevere through challenging texts.
Our school does not have a library.
Students depend on classroom libraries to provide access to interesting and thought provoking stories. With the curriculum focusing so heavily on informational texts, the students are limited in their exposure to literary texts. Expanding our classroom library will provide them with the opportunity to increase their comprehensions through narratives as well as motivate them to read.
