Third Graders Want to Learn Financial Literacy with Hands-On Manipulatives

My students need large magnetic money, 6 calculators, and pencils so they can work on word problems involving money on our magnetic whiteboards.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Kugelman's classroom raised $175

My Students

I teach a fantastic group of 25 third grade students in sunny Southern California. Last year over 36% of the students at my school qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school prides itself in integrating the arts and technology curriculum into all of our academic studies. Students learn best when they are actively involved in their learning. I love the students at our school because many are often third generation immigrants and speak a language other than English at home, such as Spanish, Tagalog, or Indian.

Financial literacy is important in the classroom, but essential for life.

The Common Core standards help prepare students for college and adult life, so having magnetic play money and calculators will help my third graders understand how to learn mental math and solve real life math problems too.

My Project

Financial literacy means that students develop a keen understanding of money and using money when they are working with word problems during our math lessons. The California Common Core state standards want third grade students to have a deep understanding of whole numbers and fractions. Using play money is a great way to connect real life math problems with our curriculum.

We will use the large magnetic money I have requested to solve problems and share the calculations on our magnetic whiteboards.

The calculators will be used to check our work as we balance our student-designed checkbooks and learn adding and subtracting skills up to the thousands. I have also requested pencils for my students to use as they work through word problems on paper.

Your help in donating to this project means that my students will be able to dive into money and numbers problems with ease. My job is to have my students truly understand money and have a good sense of financial literacy. Having these essential manipulatives to explore word problems and various math problems will help my students get that deep understanding which they will be able to use in third grade and for life!
