Third Graders Get Their Hand on Reading and Math!

My students need engaging, hands-on materials so that they can actively and independently run their own literacy stations and math centers. This will allow me to focus on holding small group instruction for reading and math!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These third-graders are such enthusiastic and independent learners, yet they also thrive with opportunities for teamwork and collaboration. They are connecting with content in deeper and more complex ways than ever before.

One of my favorite experiences each year is taking a step back, as my students become more independent and involved in their education, and observing how brilliant their brains are.

By the middle of the year, I have witnessed students running their own learning groups and partnerships during reading, writing, and math instruction. Each and every one of them is so capable of tremendous greatness and growth. I am so lucky that I get to play a role in their development as learners.

My students are from Boyle Heights in Los Angeles, California. Our school is a Title I school with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. The school is rich in culture, community, love, and support. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to get my hands on all the materials and resources I would like for my classroom and students.

My Project

I want to provide my students with hands-on, interactive materials that will motivate them to be active participants during learning. My students will be utilizing many of these materials on a daily basis during small and whole-group instruction. The "Hands-On" teaching kits will provide each and every student with concrete math manipulates so that they can explore complex math concepts in an engaging ways. The "Building Math Skills Write & Wipe Boards," number lines, and magnetic math materials will be used during math instruction so that students can visualize math concepts. Lastly, the "Self-Checking Language Practice Cards," "Match & Sort Language Quickies," "Think, Talk, Write Nonfiction Reading Center," and "Intervention Reading Folders" will be used during student-run literacy stations so that I can better focus on small group reading and English Language Development instruction.

Ultimately, I believe that these materials will foster a more engaging and hands-on learning environment.

I hope that my students will discover that math and reading can be fun and exciting! I hope this project will improve my students' lives by providing them with ample opportunities to take initiative in their own learning and growth.
