This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of us can remember reading teacher picked books or boring textbook stories, worksheets in math, and magazines were for adults only; as we yearned to study our own interests and independence.

My students attend a K-8 school in a rural part of town.

The majority of the population is Hispanic, so most of my students are English Language Learners. About 95% of my students participate in the federally funded lunch program. They are extremely bright, but because they lack supplies or funding, my students do not always get the same opportunities as students in other districts. My students are eager to learn. In Arizona, a new law has been passed that if a student does not meet the reading requirements or pass the standardized assessment, then they will be retained. My students being English language learners face the obstacle of learning the language, learning reading comprehension, and searching for their personal interest in reading.

My Project

The books and magazine subscription requested are to build our classroom's library with fiction and nonfiction reading that will peak their interests in a variety of subjects; including history and science. With more books available in the classroom, more literacy activities will become available as student interest will grow from a selection they can choose from versus the textbook selections. The headphones and computer program will build our classroom's math lab and computer lab. Students grow up with technology all around them, but without much of it in the classroom. While the students think they are playing video games, they'll be interactively reinforcing the math skills and reading comprehension skills they're working on during our whole group lesson. The library and math lab will be available to them as independent practice or centers-rotation practice with partners.

Third grade is a critical age for reading comprehension and fundamental mathematics.

With the materials requested, our classroom will turn into an interactive library as well as a math lab. These materials will provide my students with more resources to reinforce the skills they are learning and excel in math, history, science, and reading. Their interests will grow as they work on the skills they need for their futures.
