Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from very diverse backgrounds and that is what makes each one of them unique! A large percentage of my students speak a native language, from Swahili to Amharic, and still manage to faithfully attend school to learn yet another language, English. And they are great at it! At any given moment you can roam the halls of my school and pick up as many as 20 different languages and I've managed to also pick up a phrase or two here or there, thanks to my students! What I love about my students is every one of them has a starkly different home life but they support and celebrate each other's success in a way that I have never seen before! They truly take to heart the phrase, "A friend to all"!

I am working on creating a maker space in our classroom so that my students get hands-on learning, sparking their creativity and imagination!

This in turn will fuel their imagination even more and they will get the experience of knowing how things work. These students will also be a part of our after-school coding club and will get a head start on manipulating objects through trial and error in order to get them working or moving.

Our maker space will be twice a week with a longer rotation on Fridays where students will be able to rotate to different stations and build unique characters, design a robot or build a tower using supplies such as magnetic tiles, or testing their hypothesis of force and motion using the marble run. A maker space is the perfect place where students can collaborate with their peers and inquire about the world around them, which is part of 21st century skill and mindset that every student needs!
