I teach second grade in an urban elementary school. In my classroom, students' prior knowledge and everyday experiences are the basis for instruction. I am always looking for ways to channel my students' natural curiosity and creativity into academic endeavors.
Because students are extremely curious about the natural world around them, science is a rich subject area. However, I have found that without the proper science tools available, many of my students' questions go unanswered. Questions such as, "Which rock is heaviest?" or "How much water does it take float my foil boat?", can never be accurately answered without the appropriate measurement tools. Were these tools to be available, students could answer these questions. Additionally, they could come up with new and exciting experiments all the time!
I love my job as a second grade teacher. Part of my job is to excite children about the world around them and their place within it. I bring in scientists from the community so that students can imagine themselves as scientists. I follow up on student interests and try to create a classroom space which invites inquiry and experimentation. Having the science tools listed here would help me to help these students think of themselves as scientists all the time!
