The music classroom is a place where students can have a sense of pride and accomplishment. It is also a place where a student can experience self-expression and creativity. It may provide an escape for those who seek musical refuge or it can be the one class that a student finds themselves excelling in. No matter what, I want our class to truly matter to them.
I teach over 100 students at a Title-1 school in central Florida.
This means that over 75% of our student population is on free or reduced price lunch due to financial strife. However, we are a strong community and push through the challenges, and are committed to the kids and their total education. My students are driven and extremely talented, and I feel they deserve the best when it comes to the equipment and materials we use in my class.
My Project
We currently have a music library at our school that is in need of a massive makeover. Currently the music is a bit disorganized and filed using cardboard boxes that are pretty flimsy, faded and falling apart. Since music is pretty expensive (at about $50-80 per piece of music) it needs to be protected efficiently so that it can last for many years to come.
These storage boxes we are requesting are a big step forward in ensuring our sheet music stays neat and organized for many years to come.
Each box will hold 5-6 pieces instead of one flimsy cardboard box per piece. This will also allow for a better electronic filing system that the director is working on to make finding music easier.
