Help me give my students who struggle with sitting to complete independent work a chance to work at a standing station. Our “Thinking Classroom” for mathematics promotes movement that is critical to engagement, collaboration, and work completion.
Since adopting the “Building A Thinking Classroom” approach, even the most challenged student is engaged. Students work collaboratively at wall work stations to solve rigorous problems. They present their work to others so that all may benefit. At the end of the lesson, they must do an exit ticket independently.
For those students who struggle to sit quietly, these standing stations will make independent work as welcomed as the rest of the class activities.
The addition of these two stations would benefit not only those students who need to move, but would provide students with another spot for collaboration or one-on-one time with a paraprofessional or a teacher.
Being able to provide students with the learning environment they need will pay dividends in terms of their growth. Using a standing station in a “Building A Thinking Classroom” will not have the stigma it may have had in the past. Students will welcome the chance to work at these stations and I am confident that there will be “standing room” only in my math classroom!
