Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Research has shown that our old style math classes - chalk talk - are not effective in getting students to think. Sure, many of them write things down and memorize/mimic, but very few understand what they are doing.
Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics aim to change that by using research based methods such as having students work collaboratively to figure out how to solve problems - instead of just being handed formulas to use.
In real life, you are not given a formula sheet when faced with math problems like how much paint to buy for a wall, or how to do your budget. Students need to learn how to problem solve when life throws math their way.
Having whiteboard surfaces for them to work on increases this collaboration by making them less fearful of making mistakes. Having the whiteboards on vertical surfaces as well as on their tabletops helps to move information around the room so the whole class can learn together while still working in small groups.
