Thinking and Coding in Pre-K

My Students

My school is in an urban area, and it is classified as a low-performing school due to attendance and low test scores. Our school is able to provide us with some items; however, resources are limited.

We are learning and growing in our Early Childhood classroom for students with Autism.

They range in age from 3 to 5 years old. We spend our days working and playing together to increase our kindergarten readiness skills. We are working hard to increase our functional skills to interact more with our peers.

My Project

My students need a surface pro and a Rocktopus to help enhance our STEM center. We have been working on basic coding and technology, using computer programs and coding toys. The students enjoy playing with toys that allow them to create music, they enjoy making rhythmic patterns and hearing the sounds of different instruments. The Rocktopus will help to engage the students in a fun activity and while teaching them to think and solve problems.

In the early childhood setting it's challenging to provide students with authentic STEM experiences.

It is critical that we engage our early learners as we give them opportunities to develop their STEM skills. In our Pre-K class we're constantly looking for every opportunity to increase critical thinking.

We're using different coding sites for kids and the students struggle to use a mouse. The touch capabilities of the Surface Pro will allow my students to interact with STEM activities with ease.
