Thinking and Coding in Pre-K

My students need two Think & Learn Code-a-pillars, a Surface Pro, and accessories for our STEM-based projects.

My Students

My school is in an urban area, and it is classified as a low-performing school due to attendance and low test scores. Our school is able to provide us with some items to create projects; however, resources are limited.

We are learning and growing in our Early Childhood Developmentally Delayed Classroom.

The students in my class have all been diagnosed with a disability. They range in age from 3 to 5. Although there are many activities we struggle with, we enjoy playing in centers as we increase our social skills.

My Project

My students need a surface pro and 2 Think & Learn Code-a-pillars to help in our classroom STEM center. We have been working on basic coding and technology, using computer programs and coding toys. The students are quickly designing and creating elaborate STEM projects while engaged in play.

In the early childhood setting it's challenging to provide students with authentic STEM experiences.

It is critical that we engage our early learners as we give them opportunities to develop their STEM skills. In our preschool class we're constantly looking for every opportunity to increase critical thinking.

We're currently using the Think & Learn Code-a-pillar app as a fun engaging tool for coding. We have a couple netbooks that require students to work with a mouse. We have many students with limited mouse skills. The touch capabilities of the surface pro will allow students to focus on the coding without the stress of maneuvering a mouse. Receiving the code-a-pillars will help to reinforce the skills learned using the app, in a real world setting. Students can focus on becoming our future scientist and scholars.
