My students need a color printer to bring their ideas to life vividly, pin-making supplies, poster board for classroom assignments, and large digital clocks to keep an eye on the time.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am lucky enough to work with incredibly intelligent, witty, and resilient teenagers from all over the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. My students attend six different high schools within a large high school campus in the Bronx. Unfortunately, over the past few years, student library usage had decreased.
As the new campus librarian for the 4,300+ students who share the building, my goal is to change that!
In my last school, I worked with colleagues and students to make our school library one of the most popular and welcoming spaces in the building. I'm eager to build my new-to-me campus library into a similar space, where students are excited to find out what's new, check out culturally relevant and diverse books, learn about the world around them, spend time with peers, and explore their creativity.
My Project
Recently, thanks to DonorsChoose, the library acquired a button-making machine. Students have been very pleased to use the button maker to create their own custom designs and share them with their friends. In our library, we have black and white printers; black and white printouts are not ideal for making buttons so we have been cutting pictures from magazines to make the buttons.
With a button maker and a dedicated color printer, students will be able to express themselves and create their own custom messages.
Several students and school clubs have already expressed interest in running a button-making station for special events. I'd also like to have students use the button making to promote the library and reading for fun. For example, April is always School Library Month; in the future, it would be wonderful for students to create custom library buttons. Visiting classes can also use buttons with students as a way to promote different messages and share research findings, even in math? "Got pi?" The possibilities for engagement and creation are endless!
Students have begun to see the library as a resource center, which leads them to stop in looking for supplies. We have a supply of pencils, pens, highlighters, loose leaf paper, and markers available. Recently however, students have been asked to give in-class presentations with visual aids. A number of students have come to the library in search of poster paper, but at present we do not have any available. Students are permitted to come to the library during their lunch period and at the end of the school day. Though there are clocks mounted on the wall in the building, none of them are functional. Students would benefit from having digital clocks in the library to manage their library time.
