My Students

No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings. ~ William Blake. Birdwatchers may be the first to recognize the necessity of conservation. Looking for owls in forests, watching raptors over fields, or shorebirds, the preservation and protection of both wildlife and habitat are important.

I teach sixty fabulous fifth graders who have been identified as gifted.

We are part of a large metropolitan public school district in Alabama and most of the children are on free lunch program. Each day I have different students come from the various schools for gifted class and for most this is the only way they are exposed to an advance curriculum which is suitable for their intellect.

My Project

My students need ten field guides and four various books on the identification of birds as part of their Think Like an Ornithologist unit. While creating our unit, Think Like an Ornithologist, my students were privileged to meet volunteers from our local Audubon chapter. After their visit, my students became hooked on identifying the birds in our urban environment. The field guides needed will assist them in the identification of local birds. They did not realize the number of birds that they see on a daily business. Also as part of the unit, they are learning about the necessity of conservation of the bird habitats.

Supporting our project will make it possible for my students to have this very important learning experience.

They will learn about the birds around them, conserving their habitats, and also get outside. Without your help, my students will not be able to be involved, thus learn
