Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a small elementary school with just under 400 students who come from suppressed economic backgrounds; over 90% receive free breakfast and free lunch. The majority of our students have had limited or no exposure to science, technology, engineering or math outside of the classroom.
For many of our students, thinking creatively is a struggle, thinking of questions to ask is a challenge, and feeling that it is okay to make mistakes is uncommon.
We strive to change that.
My Project
My classroom has become the school STEM lab this year and I will work with every student at our school. Since the STEM lab is brand new, we have very limited materials and resources. Safety is my top priority so we will need safety goggles for many projects such as dremmel woodworking, and hot plate burners for chemistry. We cannnot get started on the fun stuff without them! The Makey Makeys will be used with students k-5 allowing them to turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. Students will be able to do art, engineering, and everything in between with makey makeys.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
