Think Globally--Act Locally--Service Learning to Save Earth
My students need 2 Properties of Earth Activity Tubs and 4 Properties of Earth Book Libraries to engage 5th graders in a service learning project to save the Earth.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Service learning enhances learning, builds character, and develops a sense of civic responsibility while improving schools and strengthening communities. I am the counselor/ reading improvement teacher for our middle school. I would like to engage my reading students in a service learning project.
My students attend a small middle school in rural Texas.
While we are a high-poverty school, we have been rated either exemplary, or recognized by the state of Texas, every year for the past 10 years. My mission is to provide a unique education to help my students develop into life-long learners and responsible citizens who possess the education and self-esteem to compete successfully in a technologically advanced and multiculturally diverse society.
My reading improvement students face additional, special challenges.
My Project
We are requesting the Properties of Earth Activity Tubs and Book Libraries so my 8th grade reading improvement students can present earth science lab activities, and engage in group and partner reading with our 5th grade science students. Our state assesses essential knowledge and skills in science in both the 5th and 8th grades. In both our district, and on a state-wide level, the earth sciences have always been the weakest area. Our project would strengthen these skills both in my reading improvement students, and the 5th grade science students. In addition, the project will build the character of my students, help them develop a sense of civic responsibility, while improving both our elementary and middle schools, and strengthening the community as a whole. They will teach the younger students about earth processes, the importance of protecting our planet, while engaging in hands-on lab activities, and group and partnered reading. I believe the results will be priceless.
I am a lifelong learner and responsible citizen.
I want my students to be the same. The spark in their eyes when I reach them is payment that could never be replaced with gold. Your generous donations to this project can bring that tiny spark to life.
