They Still Need To Know What TIME It Is!

My students need subscriptions to Time For Kids and Weekly Reader to help them develop reading skills as they apply what they learn in school to the world around them.

My Students

I teach a class called nonfiction, which is really a mix of social studies and science, but which is taught with an emphasis on building more complete literacy than a normal school can provide. That is what we are all about at KIPP: going above what is considered normal and what is expected.

Our whole charter school, and especially our students, are amazingly driven and hungry for the opportunity that knowledge can provide.

As a start-up charter school, we do not yet have all the materials to provide the diverse instruction that we long to deliver. It is difficult, and expensive, to bring our kids the reading materials they need to be exposed to in order to be as prepared as possible for the journey that lies ahead. Our students are exceedingly curious about the world and I know that by bringing them a variety of magazines reporting from around the world will capitalize on this innate curiosity.

My Project

With a variety of subscriptions from Time For Kids and Weekly Reader, I can bring the world to my students once a month, and build the type of lessons that get the kids excited about picking up the kind of texts that can really open up the doors of experience to them. As a nonfiction teacher, it would greatly ease the financial burden I face in providing my students with the variety of texts they need, and it would provide them with a regular resource that can help them build the habits of an excellent, life-long reader.

We all know that being literate with as many kinds of texts as possible is the key to unlocking a great future.

By providing my students with these high-impact resources, you can immediately help us raise the level of literacy in our school, as well as expose them to the cultures and issues that will shape their futures. And by giving to a KIPP school, you can rest assured that our students will work as hard as possible to make the best use of the resources you help provide us with.
