Our students are energetic, creative, and eager to learn. I teach at a K-8 school where the majority of students come from severely low-income families. One hundred percent of students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.
Despite these hardships, these students come to school every day ready to learn and be the best that they can be.
Our students are motivated to learn. We strive to make school an enjoyable experience where all students feel safe and engaged. As their teacher, I aim to foster their curiosity and love of learning.
My students have gone through many changes in the last few years: from learning from home, transitioning to the middle school environment, and even personality changes. Some of my students are struggling to be able to focus on their work while they sit in the typical hard plastic chairs that are in our middle school classrooms. Flexible seating, like the requested wheeled chairs, allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
The tissues will add to our flexible classroom while giving a designated spot for the students to help themselves take care of their needs helps to foster independence.
