They Say My Child Is Gifted: Now What?

My students need 20 copies of "The Gifted Kids' Survival Guide".

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Garrett's classroom raised $338

"Gifted children are the thinkers of today, the developers of tomorrow and the architects of our future."

I teach at a school where 89% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of them do not have proper clothing and housing for the harsh winter months we endure, but in spite of all of this we have many students in the gifted program that have excelled in many ways...mostly in academics. While high achievement in academics is crucial, they also need to be prepared for the social and emotional challenges that they will experience as gifted children of poverty.

Without help and guidance with social skills many gifted children will seek deviant means to satisfy their curiosity. I have invested some money in books that help young children with social skills but I need more books than I cannot afford to purchase. I have one classroom set but I need 3 classroom sets since I work with all the identified gifted students in my building.

With your help, my students will be able to address many of their social needs to include 10 ways to make school cool, the perfection infection, 4 great ways to turn on your brain, smart ways to make and keep good friends, how to handle hassles at home and how to be the best you can be. You may be thinking that this would benefit all children and in truth it would, but what makes this more critical for gifted kids is the fact that many of them already feel different because though they are the same chronological age as their peers their intellect far exceeds their peers and at times exceeds that of the teacher. This presents a huge problem in the classroom as well as at home with parents. By working through the book I want you to purchase, students will have a successful year at home and at school. For this reason, and many others, I ask that you support this effort in being successful socially and emotionally.
