I teach Junior Seminar to a diverse body of students at a high performing STEM school where 90% of our student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch. My classes, comprised solely of high school juniors are preparing for life after high school, and are exploring options for university, technical college, and other post-secondary pursuits.
The 65 students I teach are a fun bunch.
They enjoy music during instruction, dancing during brain breaks, and “dad jokes, which MUST be updated every few days.
My Project
In Junior Seminar, students learn the ins and outs of the ACT test; remediate content in English, Math, Reading, and Science; and learn and practice strategy for taking this very important test. Aside from this, our class also focuses on self-discovery, exploring post secondary options, and understanding how to pick, apply for, and qualify for college. We also lead financial planning and adjusting to the transition from adolescences to college bound adults.
Some of the tools we use to teach these brilliant students requires that they work at their own pace - listening to tutorials on key content and walking through individualized lessons.
But not all students have the ability to do that right now.
Having a class set of headphones that students can use will enable them to listen to the lessons, and even music and meditations, without the temptation of their cellular devices. It also is helpful to have this available for students who do not have earbuds are headphones of their own, and takes away the pressure and anxiety that comes with not being able to participate in independent work in the classroom.
Furthermore, as studies done at Stanford University in 2007 have shown, music aids students’ learning abilities and increases focus during independent work in listeners, according to a Stanford University study. I believe this is an added benefit to being able to offer headphones to students to use in this class.
