My Project
Often, the deciding factor between academic struggle and academic success is a student's reading level.
Although numerous studies have shown that reading levels can be raised significantly with as little as thirty minutes of reading a day, most language arts classes don’t do much reading.
Instead, they focus on skills, analyzing short excerpts that rarely have the students read more than a few minutes at a time. While this skill practice is beneficial, in many ways it’s like a basketball coach who has his players do passing drills all practice but never has them practice the sport itself. Most curriculums are designed around the idea that students will read at home, but for a variety of reasons–technology chief among them–that rarely happens anymore.
My class was created to address that. Essentially a reading study hall where students are encouraged to read higher and higher level books, the goal is to supplement their language arts class with that much needed independent reading time. I've found that the struggle is not getting my students to read for 45 minutes at a time, but rather staying stocked on the books that they WANT to read.
The great thing about THIS list of books is that it is almost entirely comprised of the latest books in popular series, some of which students have waited months to read. They need to know what happens next!
