My Students
Have you ever had a time where you struggled to read? A time when everything in you wanted to do or be anywhere else than your language arts class or reading intervention block? That's exactly how the 5th and 6th grade students feel. The students would love to have a book they could relate to.
These 5th/6th graders are notorious for taking excessive bathroom breaks, not cooperating while in group, and doing everything possible to stay out of the classroom.
The one thing they do enjoy though is a book that they can both read and relate to.
This is my first year with this particular group of students. At the beginning of the year they were obnoxious, know-it-alls who hated coming to groups. They hated that their friends knew that they struggled to read and would rather be sent to in-school suspension than to have to sit through a reading lesson. Once we got a room to call our own, they felt at liberty to grow, learn, and even struggle together.
These students live in a poverty-stricken neighborhood and go to a high poverty school. These students are bright-eyed and determined to beat the odds and one day make it to college.
My Project
We need 15 copies of this great book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This is a book my students can relate to because they too have experienced difficulties and discrimination in their lives. I want them to know that although they have gone through these things, show them how even a character in a book has overcome the odds and rejection of society.
This group of students feel a strong need to want to fit in and be like everyone else. Typically that "everyone else" they have in mind are the trouble makers. If we as teachers could just switch their focus to something much more productive like reading and inspiring them to be that change, I know these students will go far.
These book will allow them the opportunity to expand their vocabulary, to learn new ideas, and would provide them with reading that they would enjoy. So no more ditching group time, no more extended potty breaks, just good old fashioned reading and learning.
My students have trouble reading.
Some of my oldest students are 14 in the 6th grade and are reading at a 3rd grade level. Not only do they struggle to read, but they do not have the support that they need from home. Our school also does not have a school library. Our students do not have easy access to books that they would enjoy reading. In fact, the only books that they do read are either from the very limited classroom library. Having these books would really make their day.
