My Students
My students are a reflection of our community. I teach in a school where 37% identify as white, 34% as Black, 11% Hispanic and 8% Asian; the remainder identify as mixed race or another race.
I teach in a one to one computer environment.
Students learn to use the computer as an investigative tool.
We serve a large group of students with diverse needs. Over 59% in poverty, and 2% of our students are homeless. 15% of our students are in Special Ed and near 7% are English Language Learners.
My Project
In my classroom, students do not read from a standard textbook. Instead, they read from multiple texts so that they can gather multiple perspectives of US history. Students become historical investigators, reading different texts, looking at primary and secondary sources, weighing evidence, and answering essential question and supporting questions they have about the time periods.
Essential to this work looking at diverse voices from all walks of life.
The book I want to teach, "They Call Us Enemy" by George Takei, shares the story of his internment as a boy during Japanese Internment during WW2.
This work is not only important for them to learn how to be historical investigators. It is also to understand their fellow community members histories that do not look like them, but very much have life experiences in common.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
