Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you read your high school or college newspaper? Remember when you saw yourself or your best friend in there for the first time? I work at a school in South Central Los Angeles. I teach the Journalism class and we are responsible for producing and putting out the school newspaper.
There was no newspaper until I started here two years ago and was blessed with a 25 computer classroom. My school is breaking into small learning communities and I have to move without the computers. This means that the kids will have a hard time producing the paper. I usually have about 30 kids and only 5 of them this year had personal computers. Not having computers will make it hard for the newspaper to be produced.
My school has roughly 2000 kids from one of the poorest sections of Los Angeles including 3 housing projects which feed into the school. The students LOVE the newspaper and it is always a huge hit when it comes out. In fact I have students ask me every day when the next edition is coming out. The problem is I am worried about having no computers to put out the paper with next year.
Two laptops would make it easier to produce the paper. Desktops would take up a lot of space and I am sure that the room I will have next year is much smaller then the one I am currently in.
My students do not get excited about much. They are not given many chances and they do not read a lot. This newspaper is a connection to the outside world and a chance for them to learn about many more things then life in the "ghetto" and the kids who work on the paper have great potential. Without computers I am sure there will be no newspaper next year and I do not want that to be taken away from my students. You can help these students have a great high school experience and develop skills to last them a lifetime.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
