Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income/high poverty urban school district. Their experiences are limited.
They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, with challenges including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households, and 99% receive free lunch and breakfast. My students are 70% Hispanic and 30% African-American. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.
My Project
Flexible seating is essential in today's classroom. Students need to find a comfortable spot where they can learn best. I have three ball chairs which my students fight over. I would like to write this grant to get a few more options for flexible seating.
Students should not be restricted to rows, they should have the flexibility to choose a seat where they can focus on learning.
I will create several spaces around the room, where students can choose to do their work on clipboards as well as at low tables. Together with rocking chairs and homemade crate seating, these supplies will help my students be ready to learn and make independent choices that support their learning.
