My Students

Hippocrates wrote, “Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.” Help inspire the future doctors, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and first responders in our classroom.

My students are a diverse group of motivated middle schoolers all eager to get a jump-start on a future healthcare profession.

Through this class, I hope to empower these future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience. Our purpose is to develop leadership and technical skills through project-based learning and community service projects.

My Project

As my future healthcare professionals learn the skills needed for these careers, I want them also to learn some history of biomedicine. This New York Times and USA Today bestseller young reader’s version of “The Radium Girls” is the perfect book for us to read together as a class. It tells historical account of the radium dial painters of the early 20th century and the illness they suffered from a then-misunderstood deadly element, Radium. “Amid the excitement of the early twentieth century, hundreds of young women spent their days hard at work painting watch dials with glow-in-the-dark radium paint. The painters consider themselves lucky - until they started suffering from a mysterious illness. As the corporations try to cover up a shocking secret, these shining girls suddenly find themselves at the center of a deadly scandal. The Radium Girls: Young Readers Edition tells the unbelievable true story of these incredible women, whose determination to fight back saved countless lives.”

In reading and discussing this book, I hope that it will inspire my seventh and eighth graders even more toward careers in healthcare where they, too, have the opportunity to save lives through preventive medicine or even biomedical research that is necessary to prevent repeating history.

This grant will allow us to purchase the remaining books needed for an entire class set that we could read throughout the course of the year and conduct literary circles to dive deep into this historical account.
