Imagine feeling like there is something driving you crazy all the time, but you can't quite put your finger on it. That's what it is like being stuck under florescent lights all day at school.
We are privileged to have the opportunity to educate such a diverse population.
The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Our population also consists of about a third of our students for whom English is not their primary language. We work very hard to ensure that all of our students have a safe learning environment to come to each day. Our state requires an enormous amount of testing and each year they step up to the plate in spite of their socioeconomic background to prove to the state how smart they really are.
My Project
I am requesting 4 packs of Cozy Shades (florescent light filters). Another teacher on my team received these shades and it is shocking what a difference they make on the feel of the room. In our building, there are two light switches for each room. Having both on makes the florescent lights unbearable, having only one on is too dim to work by. Even as an adult with no disabilities, I love the feeling of walking into her room and feeling the relief of not having the irritating lights that are in the rest of our school. So, imagine what an impact it would have on my many students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADHD, or just the students who have a little bit of trouble focusing.
We have the benefit of being located in a beautiful building that is less than 10 years old.
However, most of the things that go into building are done because of cost and feasibility for the construction process, and that doesn't always jive with student learning. Florescent lights may be cheap and easy to install on a large scale, but they are really not conducive to a peaceful learning environment. These filters will help create that calm place where learning can happen for all of my students.
