This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in the one of the highest poverty areas in our nation. Despite their economic hardships, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. My goal is to instruct them them in a way that makes them intrinsically motivated and foster their curiosity and inquisitiveness. All children are capable of learning. However, children learn differently. It is my job to make the classroom and instruction as conducive to the child's needs as possible. Many of my students have one of the most common disorders, ADHD. The numbers of students with ADHD is increasing every year. Did you know that most classrooms are not ADHD friendly? Often, teachers do not know how to interact effectively with the ADHD student. Consequently, many children become anxious or depressed and develop a negative attitude toward school.

There is hope!

If classrooms and instruction can be adjusted to the student's needs and learning styles, students with ADHD are capable of accomplishing amazing feats. Just look at Da'Vinci, John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, Alexander Graham Bell, Galileo, Edison, Mozart, Beethoven, George Bernard Shaw, Bill Gates, and Einstein! Please help me to close the educational gap for these children.

My Project

Did you know that the rocking motion soothes the brain and facilitates concentration along with the ability to think logically, which provides overall better cognitive processing? Many of my students have ADHD. Rocking helps students who are experiencing a brain state of high arousal to be able to transition to a much more clam brain state to enhance his/her ability to learn and problem solve. Additionally, my students have a difficult time keeping their personal space. They also have low muscle tone and weak core muscles. The rocking chairs help my kids sit and focus for sustained periods of time in their own personal space. I can teach a mini-lesson without stopping to tell my children to sit up, focus, etc. Criss cross applesauce is difficult for my children. Rocking chairs make a world of difference!
