These Growing Readers Need Harder Books!

My students need interesting books on their level. They are now in 3rd-5th grade and have grown so much in reading! Books such as Bad Kitty, and Captain Awesome will keep them engaged.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the hardest working students in our school.

All of my students are special education students- they are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Language Disabilities or Other Health Impairments.

These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners– many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title One School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.

My Project

I am so lucky as a resource teacher that I get to keep the same students year after year. It is so exciting to see how much my students have grown in reading the last several years. We are now focusing on reading comprehension. We really need higher level chapter books to apply our learning. My students have helped pick books out that they are excited to read.

My Special Education students take pride in being able to read chapter books now.

However, I don't have chapter books to promote their pride in reading. Not only will these books be used in the classroom, but my students check these books out from me after school to take home. This is how much they love reading! I want to continue this love for reading so that they can grow as readers.
