These Frustrated Students Need Desks of Their Own!

My Students

Imagine having a disability of some kind that has made it difficult for you to keep pace academically and socially with the other students in your class. You start falling behind. You become frustrated. The work gets harder and harder as the rest of the class pulls further and further ahead of you, leaving you in their dust. The years pass and the next thing you know you're 1-3 grade levels behind everyone else your age. You hate doing schoolwork because you don't understand it, and you start dreading going to school.

My classroom is a special education classroom primarily for students with autism (although other disability designations are represented) who are 1-3 grade levels behind their peers and thrive in a smaller-sized classroom with specific strategic interventions!

My students love coming to school and supporting each other. They crave learning, and they ask and answer questions enthusiastically. They are intelligent, artistic, athletic, creative, compassionate, witty, and hilarious!

My Project

We have a severe shortage of desks at our school. The students in the general education classrooms all have desks of their own, but in my special education classroom we were only offered a few tables to fit my students around.

In this potentially dangerous time of in-person learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, seating my students so close together at shared tables is a serious health risk.

My students find it difficult to keep their masks over their faces all day, and they often forget to practice basic hygiene such as using a tissue to wipe their noses or remembering to wash their hands after they use the bathroom.

Additionally, students with autism and other disabilities find it stressful and emotionally taxing to be in such close proximity with each other and not have their own personal space. Having a desk of their own would not only keep my students safer health-wise, but would also make it much easier for classmates to respect their boundaries.
