My Students

Jack London said, "You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club." I would like to help my class of fifth grade authors chase down their inspiration by providing a vast array of model texts for them to use to stimulate their own writing.

Writing is such an abstract subject for young students.

The fifth graders in my class, not unlike students in other schools across the country, struggle daily with their writing skills. With budget cuts hitting the school district hard, our high-poverty, Title One school cannot provide as much rich literature as needed.

My Project

With these mentor texts, students will become familiar with different genres of writing, especially personal narrative writing. They can compare the genre through the eyes of different writers and experiment with their own styles. By being exposed to rich examples, they will feel increased confidence when asked to write their own pieces. The mentor texts the students will be exposed to include titles written by Patricia Polacco, Eve Bunting, Tomie dePaola, and Jerry Spinelli.
