About My Students

The students asking for this donation to the classroom are super-sweet. The struggle they face is they are from high poverty areas and attend an under-funded public school. They wake up in the morning, take care of their younger siblings, and then take the subway to school where they are scanned through metal detectors. Then, they finally begin their school day. Many of the students have individualized education programs, as they are special needs students. As special needs students, they need special technology.

We want to be empowered to help each other succeed not only in the classroom but also in the real world. We work with our teacher. He asks us what we like to do, what motivates us, how we motivate each other, and what we need to succeed in school and in life. We are thankful for every opportunity given to us and we will make use of every thing that can help us to succeed in life.

Students need to develop their reading skills and their love for reading during their high school years if they are to become life long readers. Academically, they will be learning how to annotate, how to think about their thinking, and how to make connections between their lives and what they are reading. These books also have tremendous socio-emotional skills attached to them, as they are all about adolescents coming to terms with who they are and figuring out ways to help each other. Through class discussions, book groups, and projects, our students will be acquiring the skills needed to help each other both in and out of school. In doing so, they will learn what empathy is and how they can be the change in the world that they strive to see.

In Their Own Words

We want to be able to have books in the classroom that we want to read, like the book Thirteen Reasons Why. We want to be able to choose what we read and to find books that help us develop as the best people and humanitarians that we can be.

We will be able to help each other when we are dealing with real life problems. A lot of the books here deal with issues that we face in our own lives. It is sometimes easier to see how to fix things when you read about them happening to someone else. So we want to show each other that things can be fixed, and made better in our own lives. We want to lead each other to the best versions of our selves possible. We want to create a better and more supportive school environment and culture, and it begins with these books.

Our school can sometimes lack community or at least the feeling of a community. It takes a common topic for us to all be brought together. These books have common topics on them that we can all rally around. We want to build a better, and stronger, community, one where we feel we can rely and depend on each other when we need to. These books will give us something to talk to each other about, and something to build a bridge between us. We will connect with other and be able to be there for each other.
