My students need 4 ant farms, 6 ant books, 2 timers to measure the speed of ants, ant life cycle figurines, an ant game and magnifying glasses to see ants close up.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ants! They're those little insects that invade the sweets, ruin the picnic, and make a trail after it rains. Students are fascinated by them and enjoy reading, observing, and searching for them while completing a theme in our language program but we need more materials for students to use.
The second grade students attend a Title 1 public school in a low socio-economic area.
Most students receive free lunch and many live in multi-family homes. Many students come from financially disadvantaged households and do not have exposure to non-fiction materials that are of high interest to them. As our students are introduced to a story about Ants in our reading/language arts series, their interest is peaked. They are amazed that there are so many different kinds of ants; that they live in different areas; and eat different things. They have a keen interest in the topic and need to have a variety of materials that they can use to reinforce the concepts and keep them motivated to learn more about the topic.
My Project
These materials will provide the students with ant information from observing ants tunneling in the ant farms to books that tell about more than 1,000 ants. The books are at various levels to accommodate all student levels and they provide vivid pictures. Students are interested in the movement of ants and will be able to observe the amount of time it takes for ants to get from one place to another with the use of timers and will have the opportunity to see ants close up in the ant farm, in the grass, and on the blacktop using the magnifying glasses. The life cycle figurines will not only show students the various stages of an ant, but will tie in with our science unit on lifecycles. Students are often use to talking, dancing, and singing insects but this is factual and actual information. Students need to be exposed to quality non-fiction whenever possible and they will be through the requested ant materials.
Whenever there's an opportunity to integrate science with language arts and literature, it's a win-win situation for students.
The non-fiction ant materials will work in all these curriculum areas and is of high interest to the students. Students will have plenty of opportunities to explore ants, read about ants, and search for ants with these materials. Ants are here to stay! This project will help students understand how ants work, live, eat, reproduce, and seem to be everywhere!
