How many times have you used a thesaurus to find a word when writing? Well, I am training my fifth graders to learn to use a thesaurus to help expand their vocabulary.
I teach Literacy and Social Studies to two classes of fifth grade students. Each class has 30 students. In the beginning of the year, I make it a requirement for the students to bring in their own thesaurus. They come in many varieties and some don't bring any in at all. I would like to have a set of 65 thesauruses to use in the classroom so that everyone can have the same synonyms and antonyms when learning new vocabulary words. The books would be numbered so that the students could take them home to do homework assignments.
We will use the thesauruses in many different ways. We will learn new words in the novels we read as a class. I find the students learn new words easier when they can first relate it to a specific context and secondly find synonyms and antonyms. The students will also learn to identify which part of speech the word falls under and how it affects its usage.
In writing class, the students will use the thesauruses to replace their everyday words with new words to give their writing more depth. My students beam with pride when they see the difference between the first draft and the published version of a writing piece they are working on. A thesaurus is a pivotal tool in this process.
In a world where we often forget to use proper English, I value the lessons I teach my fifth graders about grammar, writing and speech. Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly fund my proposal.
