Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a resource intervention teacher - my students are two or more grade levels below benchmark in writing, reading and oral skills. They are learning how to use reference materials to expand their vocabulary. Currently, all students must share only one thesaurus; they need access to multiple copies to be able to practice and apply using a thesaurus in their writing.
Age-appropriate thesauruses will help my students build specific vocabulary. These books not only would give them practice with reference skills they greatly need, but would enable them to enrich their writing and build on the oral language we are practicing in our classes.
When I teach a lesson on specific vocabulary, access to a thesaurus would complement and scaffold student learning. For example, instead of writing in an essay: "she said", access to a thesaurus would help them write "she grumbled", or "she sighed", or "she yelled" which far improves the quality of writing.
As many of my students are learning English as a second or third language, they are in dire need of language development. These essential tools which my school lacks would be a great benefit to them.
My 35 students (whom I see in small groups) would benefit from these resource books. Additionally, as my site is a SAIT school (State monitored school) it is imperative we raise our test scores and these resources would help my students gain access to the academic language they need. And, my job as literacy specialist and intervention teacher was created specifically to address the needs of these most needy students. As my position is newly created and I was a classroom teacher prior to this, I lack the materials to adequately address my students' needs.
I am requesting 6 hardcover thesauruses for classroom use and 10 paperback to loan to students for homework.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
