Everyone loves a good game! Games are fun--but they are SO much more. Students can explore a new skill/concept, apply previously learned knowledge, and further develop essential concepts -- all through mathematical game play. Furthermore, math games can be easily differentiated to meet all needs.
My second grade students attend a school that serves approximately 190 students from grades K-2.
They come to second grade eager to learn in an environment that instills the importance of reasoning in mathematics, and in all content areas. Students are challenged to think beyond skills in isolation and are shown how what they are learning is applicable in their lives. Students, including students with individualized education plans, come into second grade with various abilities that are fostered and built upon.
My Project
Mathematical reasoning is encouraged through game play. All of the manipulatives/materials requested with this project will be used to play games that are motivating, help develop students' positive attitudes about mathematics, and ultimately strengthen their number sense, reasoning, and use of strategies.
The items requested with this project are also non-consumable. They can be used for many years to come!
Second graders must be equipped to reason mathematically in their worlds.
Essential in developing this reasoning is their deep understanding of number and an ability to problem solve and test their thinking--all of which can be developed through effective instruction and the use of math games.
