Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th grade math at Bateman, a Chicago Public School. The school's population is predominately Latino and 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Every year, I teach 90+ general education, bilingual and special education students. The children are a fantastic bunch of kids who deserve the very best education we can offer. After teaching math for 7 years, I am still surprised how many students enter my classroom with negative feelings toward the subject of mathematics. In middle school, math can become a fearful subject of new abstract concepts that are difficult to visualize, especially when Algebra is introduced. I chose to teach math because I loved the subject and I want my students to leave my classroom with these same positive attitudes. To accomplish this goal, I am asking for manipulatives that can help the 90+ students I teach feel, touch and see the abstract concepts introduced in our Algebra unit. With the use of Algebra tiles, four pan balances and equation scales, I hope to make math fun and engaging for my students. These manipulatives will be used in centers where small groups of students can work cooperatively to explore these concepts! Too often when I tell other adults that I teach 7th grade math, they respond by cringing and saying, "Yuck; I hated 7th grade math." I don't want my students to have these feelings. With your help, math can be a fun, understandable, and exciting subject. Please, help make the abstract concrete for my students!
